Underarm antiperspirants reduce sweat and body moisture. But, did you know that they may contain neurotoxins linked to Alzheimer’s disease? These include aluminum-containing salts such as aluminum chloride and aluminum chlorohydrate. They likely work by blocking sweat ducts so that sweat cannot escape onto the skin surface. Yet, aluminum may still be absorbed through the skin if applied daily. 1 This is most common in women who shave their underarms and have small abrasions in the area. I am now using a natural deodorant that does not contain any aluminum, parabens, or propylene glycol.
Aluminum can be absorbed through the skin. However, it has been shown to be absorbed very minimally and to a lesser extent than what is consumed through the diet. Generally, it is considered safe when applied to the skin. 2
One study found that aluminum disrupts the activity of estrogen receptors. It is not yet clear if aluminum may increase the risk of developing breast cancer. 1 However, research has not provided conclusive evidence showing this. Some women may still prefer to avoid applying aluminum-containing products to the skin. If so, keep reading to learn more about what you should look out for.
Natural deodorants are not always aluminum-free
Unlike antiperspirants, deodorants work by reducing underarm odor. More specifically, they decrease the skin’s pH which leads to less bacterial growth. 3 Consumers often assume that deodorants labeled as natural must be safer than other kinds. Yet, aluminum is a common element found in nature. Also, many products are marketed as a combination of both an antiperspirant and deodorant. This can be misleading, so I recommend reading ingredient labels to get a better idea of what is in the product.
One type of natural deodorant is called “crystal” deodorant. The crystal is actually potassium alum. This means that it does still contain aluminum in the form of potassium aluminum sulfate. Yet, the label does not make it clear that the deodorant is not aluminum-free.
Propylene glycol
Other brands of natural deodorants still use propylene glycol in the formulation. This additive is a byproduct of fossil fuel refinement. It can also come from plant-based processes. Healthy people with normal kidney and liver function can metabolize propylene glycol. It is metabolized in the liver by alcohol dehydrogenase. 4 However, propylene glycol may also be less suitable for pregnant and nursing women. This is because infants cannot break it down to the same extent as adults. While less dangerous than ethylene glycol, it may still cause allergic reactions. One such allergy is contact dermatitis. 5
Non-toxic Deodorant
I purchased Green Tidings while searching for a non-toxic deodorant. It does not contain aluminum, parabens, propylene glycol, or artificial preservatives. I also love that Green Tidings uses a solar-powered facility. It feels great to support eco-friendly businesses. Also, this deodorant was not tested on animals. I received it within a few days, so the shipping time was great. After reading the label, it was clear to me that it was both natural and non-toxic. It came with a little pamphlet describing more about the brand and ingredients. To read more about the company or order, click here.
Green Tidings Ingredients
- Tapioca starch– made from the root of the cassava plant and used as a thickener. Very good at absorbing water, which mostly makes up sweat.
- Coconut oil– contains fatty acids such as caprylic and lauric acid. These reduce inflammation and moisturize the skin. It is also a great skin protectant with natural antioxidants and antibacterial properties.
- Baking soda– absorbs sweat and neutralizes odor.
- Shea butter– from the African shea tree. Contains vitamins A and E, as well as fatty acids including stearic and oleic acids. It is a great skin moisturizer, and can even help to repair skin damage.
- Candelilla Wax– vegan wax with a high melting point. It is a good emulsifier to help bind all the ingredients together.
- Magnesium oil– magnesium chloride in water does absorb through the skin. This may help to prevent magnesium deficiency. Keeps skin hydrated and reduces skin oiliness.
- * Lavender oil– Lavender oil has antibacterial and antioxidant properties. It can help repair skin and is a natural astringent. Also, the aroma is relaxing and can help with relieving stress.
*Also available in unscented if you are allergic to lavender.
